York Northeast: American and European Developments. Nevertheless, Japan's experience helped persuade the U.S. government in the late 1960's to enter into a high-speed passenger train experiment along the congested Northeastern seaboard (the so-called Northeast Corridor). Fast Metroliner trains, engineered along conventional lines, were built for service between New york Northeast and Washington. Turbotrains, engineered to aerodynamic standards, were built for similar service between Boston and New york Northeast. Meanwhile, proposals were advanced in the United States for "auta-trains," a concept already successfully implemented in Europe in which motorists and their automobiles ride the same train to distant points.
Although the Northeast and Middle West had a head start in railroad building, construction also continued there after the Civil War. All trunk-lines in this area aspired to reach New york Northeast City and Chicago. Some wished to penetrate farther to St. Louis and Mississippi River points, [f a new source of traffic appeared, such as petroleum in western Pennsylvania, the railroads rushed extensions to the promised land.
