Pet can be kept healthy only by giving it much freedom and exercise. Use cage as headquarters only; train pet to this use by placing food and water containers cage containers in cage. If pet must be shut up in cage at night, give it several bright toys, as it will be very active most of night; release pet in the morning. Place large, heavy, branching limb in one corner of room or enclosed porch for pet's entertainment and exercise. Provide toys, as a raccoon is playful: Tie bright or glittering trinkets to top and sides of cage and to the tree limb; a ball is liked, too. Pet also requires some petting and handling each day; this helps to gentle it.
Transfer fledgling to cage when it becomes active. Use commercial canary cage for young jay; large bird cage for crow and magpie (see Part IV). Cover cage bottom with thick layer of bird gravel. Place limb with sturdy branches in cage as perch. Train pet to use cage for headquarters by keeping food and water containers cage there.
Layer the material and lightly firm it down with the head of a rake or the back of a fork. Add the activator if necessary. Continue until the cage is full. Keep a cover over the top of the pile, and if the compost becomes dry, remove the cover and water containers cage it to encourage the rotting process.
When the cage is full a 2in layer of soil may be spread over the top instead of sacking or polyethylene. Leave the cage and if possible start to construct a second cage.
