Summer Garden Of Istanbul:

Summer Garden Of Istanbul As regards musical fare, it seems logical to listen to Turkish music, not Western, and this is provided in many a summer garden of Istanbul. One of the liveliest of them, with a stupendous view down to the Golden Horn and across it to the Old City, is Cumhuriyet Gazino (Casino), near the Pera Palace Hotel. A much smaller place is the Marmara Garden, just below the Park Hotel, whose music one can hear—sometimes too insistently —from one's own bedroom. Turkish songs sound wailing and monotonous to Western ears but that's because we can't understand their words and their preoccupation with romantic themes.

9. Turkish services are government run, under the name Devlet Havayollari, —to us—State Air Lines. Year-round flights are made on seven or eight routes, e most important one being that between Istanbul and Ankara and in summer e network is enlarged to include flights to various other cities from the great etropolis on the Bosporus. I have flown only once by this national system (several world systems also serve Turkey), but that was a memorable journey, soar¬ing over the Sea of Marmara from Istanbul to ancient Bursa, first capital of the Ottoman Empire, a city rich in medicinal springs and in famous mosques.

See Also Roof Garden:

This small Roof garden has a patterned Floor of black and white paving so, rather than compete with this, the plants are located around the edges. This is especially useful if the Roof cannot support much weight. The containers placed around the seating area are lightweight to avoid placing undue weight on the roof. Planted urns are placed at random and window-boxes have been set into the parapet. The Roof is at tree-level and surrounded by branches and leaves, so little added ornamentation or planting is needed; also, the striking geometric pattern relieves this Roof garden from appearing too dull.

Ihere's a Reflection Pool, for instance (in addition to the expected swim¬ming pool), that can be turned in an hour or two into an artificial ice-skating rink, and on the Roof level there is a cozy Winter Bar where you can be as comfortable, in enjoyment of the marvelous Bosporus-view, as you can in summer in the big Roof Garden. It goes without saying that the hotel is replete with restaurants, grills, snack bars, cocktail lounges, night¬clubs, shops, travel offices, a post office and a typists' office where you may dictate letters in any language. It is the hub of Turkish tourism and—keep this in mind—by a system of so-called "staggered prices" some of the rooms are not unduly expensive.

On The Other Hand See Palace- Garden Of That:

6. Palaces and palace- garden of thats The Royal Palace and the National palace- garden of that in Athens have been mentioned, and while the present palace is a modest affair—the old, conspicuous palace is now the Parliament Building, with the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in front of it—the palace- garden of that, south of the Parliament, is huge, heavily wooded and cool, with a labyrinth of delight¬ful walks, a wonderful place of retreat on over-warm summer days.

In Athens, the new and sumptuous Athenee Palace, the Grand Bre-tagne and the King George, all de luxe, are all on or very near Constitution. Square; the Acropole Palace, also with de luxe rating, but not quite as grand I as the others, is in another quarter, beautifully located opposite the park of 1 the Archeological Museum, on October 28th Street. Among first-class] places, four that are very convenient to the center are the Minerva, the' Athinon, the Delphi and the City Palace. In the suburb of Kephissia, Hotel Pentelikon, in palace- garden of that surroundings, is new and de luxe and there are numerous good first-class places there, three of the most attractive being the Cecil, the Semiramis and the Palace. Kephissia, incidentally, is much cooler and breezier than Athens.
