Success York: Rice was born Elmer Reizenstein. (He changed his name at the beginning of his career as a playwright.) He graduated from the New York Law School in 1912 and was admitted to the New York bar the next year. Shortly thereafter he began to write, and his first play, a courtroom, melodrama called On Trial, was accepted at once and produced in New York in 1914. An instantaneous success york, On Trial employed for the first time in the theater the "flashback" technique earlier developed in films.
