Style Sculpture Reduced: The same diffusion of a high standard of craftsmanship is shown in the visual arts. Variations of style sculpture reduced in sculpture were reduced to a few main regional schools (Athens, Aegina, Argos); in Vase painting, standardization of style sculpture reduced was promoted by the predominance of Athenian products. The art of the 5th century B.C. retained the freedom and naturalism of archaic art, but subordinated them to the principle of rational harmony, rooted in the civic consciousness of Greek culture.
This sculpture, while bold in its outlines and undercuttings, was generally coarse in execution (because it was not to be seen close by), and of little merit when taken from its original setting.
Sculptors of today can learn something from the great architectural sculpture of the past, but they must remember that a new style sculpture reduced of architecture requires a new relationship of sculpture to architecture. From the past both sculptor architect can learn effects of placement and lig ing. They can learn the value of contrasts color and material, and the telling power of li and shade and silhouette. Also they should able to discern in what ways sculpture will hance and give aesthetic accent to architectun.
For most sculpture soft, rather diffused light is agreeable, but some boldly undercut work as in the baroque style sculpture reduced, gains force and dramatic effect when illuminated by a shaft of direct light, or spotlighted. Sculpture made for an open air setting must take into account the varied effects of light that will be encountered. This sculpture is apt to be broad in execution with little attention to subtle detail, and to exhibit very strong outlines, for under many Lighting conditions such a work is seen chiefly in silhouette. |
