Stone Containers Set: Using containers; Range of containers; Choosing plants; Seasonal displays; Hanging baskets; Plant care and cultivation.
THERE ARE pots, urns, planters, troughs, Tubs and window-boxes to choose from, made of terracotta, plastic, wood and stone containers set. So you will always be able to find something suitable to include in your garden.
Containers bring the garden on to patios, terraces and balconies and, when secured to walls or window sills, they introduce a vertical element. Free-standing containers, such as urns and tubs, can be used to flank flights of steps with color, to make focal points in lawns or to add height. Pairs of containers at either side of entrances add importance and convey a welcoming message to visitors.
In many respects, small containers are more difficult to place. Several small containers scattered about do not necessarily make a bold impact and can look fussy. Furthermore, a group of small containers can also be more difficult to maintain. However, they do come into their own when placed around the edges of larger containers to soften their outlines.
THE PRECISE choice of container is always very much a matter of personal taste, but the right scale and shape are of the utmost importance for creating a pleasing effect.
• Size A container with a sizeable volume of growing medium will dry out less rapidly than a smaller container; it will also be capable of sustaining larger, more vigorous plants.
• Stability Always look for containers with large or heavy bases to give stability, especially where there is to be regular traffic of people.
• Weight Some containers, especially stone containers set ones, can be very heavy to lift and move, although this is a bonus for stability. Such containers are not easily brought home in a car: special delivery may have to be arranged. Some vases are made in sections, but even their individual parts can be weighty and awkward to transport.
• Drainage For drainage, there should always be one large hole or several smaller holes in the base of the container.
• Materials Containers made in natural materials will usually look best, but will be more expensive to acquire, especially if they have been hand-crafted or sculptured. |
