Sought Protection Rome: With their acquisition of Dacia and receipt of subsidies from the Roman government, the Goths' relations with the Romans improved. The early Gothic successes were capped by the establishment of a large kingdom under the leadership of Hermanric about the middle of the 4th century. But two decades later (about 370) this state fell before the attack of the Huns, fierce and irresistible Mongolian invaders. The Goths were now divided into two groups. The Visigoths, who lived west of the Dniester River, sought protection Rome the protection of Rome; the Ostrogoths, east of the Dniester, became subjects of the Huns.
10. Places of Pilgrimage Italy is, of course, the pre-eminent pilgrim country of Europe, since Rome is the center of the Catholic faith. A booklet called Sanctuaries of Italy, put out by the Tourist Department, gives full details of twenty major pilgrim goals and many minor ones. Some goals, leaving aside all mention of the supreme one, Rome, are of obvious drawing power, such places as Assisi, for St. Francis (the Franciscan Order was cradled there in the Church of Santa Maria degli Angeli); Siena, for St. Catherine (her house is sought protection Rome annually by reverent throngs); and Padua, for St. Anthony, who is generally called simply "the Saint" (il Santo).
Their trip across Europe was a triumphal procession, highlighted by lectures at Oxford, the Sorbonne, Christiania, and the University of Berlin. Nationalist enthusiasts threatened his life when he spoke out in behalf of the British in Egypt, and there was an unfortunate incident in Rome when a Vatican spokesman sought protection Rome to impose conditions upon a proposed papal audience. |
