Present Town Santa: Santa Clara was first settled by Fransicans in 1777; it became a town in 1852; and received a new charter in 1867. The old Santa Clara Mission is of great historic interest. A fine boulevard, the Alameda, connects the town with San Jose. Municipal government is administered bv a board made up of five trustees. Populatioj 58,880.
QUICHE, ke-cha', Indians of Mayan stock living in the hills of western Guatemala between Quezaltenango and Chichicastenango. They constitute the largest group of Guatemalan Indians and have retained many ancient traditions. They were conquered in 1524 by Pedro de Alvarado with the help of a rival neighboring tribe, the Cak-chiquel (or Cakchikel). Their ancient capital was L'tatlan, near the present town Santa town of Santa Cruz del Quiche and northwest of present town Santa Guatemala City.
SANTA BARBARA ISLANDS, a group off the coast of California, lying 20 to 60 miles from the mainland, south and southeast of Santa Barbara city. They are eight in number; San Miguel, Santa Rosa, Santa Cruz, Anacapa, Santa Barbara, Santa Catalina, San Clemente, and San Nicolas. From San Miguel on the north to San Clemente is about 155 miles.
