Plant Herbs Water: If pet is kept in house, maintain as in schoolroom. When placed in yard, conditions should represent, as closely as possible, native conditions; must have areas where soil is loose enough for pet to dig under grasses and low herbs. Advisable to use sleeping barrel, described above, until pet adjusts.
Native tortoises feed on wild Plant herbs water growth—grasses, herbs, blossoms, hard wild fruits. In captivity, give fresh grasses, alfalfa, clover, dandelion leaves, fresh green lettuce, melon rinds, apples, berries, sweet potatoes. Water—Tortoise drinks infrequently; when it does, takes large amount; water must always be available, especially in hot weather; place shallow container near retreat or sleeping quarters; keep water fresh and clean.
The very essence of a herb, and in particular parsley, chervil and mint, is lost when it is deprived of its water content. The cook can always have fresh herbs at hand for they can be grown in a window box or even in a few pots on a sunny kitchen sill. Some herbs, such as thyme, rosemary and bay, tolerate prolonged cooking but others, including chervil [ID], dill [2A] and fennel [2B], are best added to the dish at the last minute so that their aromatic qualities are not lost.
HERE ARE some favorite herbs that are grown more for their decorative appeal than for culinary reasons.
Lavandula angustifolia, commonly known as lavender, is a well-known herb used mostly in the flower garden. It has spikes of purple flowers and small, gray-green leaves, and is highly fragrant.
For a splash of color, the pot marigold, Calendula officinalis (annual), is a good rustic-style backyard Plant herbs water with vivid orange-yellow flowers, each with a dark eye. Tansy, Tanacetum vulgare, is another favorite Plant herbs water for rustic-style backyards. It has deeply cut leaves and small yellow flowers held on tall stems.
There are many other colorful ornamental herbs to brighten up the flower garden, including the nasturtium, Tropaeolum majus (annual). This has bright heads of scarlet, red, orange and yellow trumpet-shaped flowers and leaves that are rounded in shape. Bergamot, Monarda didyma, has spectacularly colorful flowers of red, pink, white or purple and the whole Plant herbs water has a delightful fragrance. |
