Peculiar Feature: A few peculiar galaxies—known technically as D-, N-, and Seyfert-galaxies—each normally the brightest member of a large cluster of galaxies, show some of the peculiar properties of quasars. These are, notably, intense radio emission, jets, and small brilliant cores of ionized gas. However, any relationship between these galaxies and quasars is still obscure. Quasars usually have much more extreme properties, and are seemingly unrelated to galaxies or clusters of galaxies.
That's one reason why the feature photography field remains comparatively uncrowded, despite its obvious advantages over spot news coverage. It's easier for the cameraman to come up to the standards of news photography than to those of feature photography. There are many photographers perfectly capable of doing features, and who would like to do them, who never get into the field for the simple reason that they don't ever see the opportunities all around them for feature pictures. They lack the knack, something akin to the "nose for news" mentioned in the previous chapter, to recognize feature picture material.
In south central France, Auvergne produced a unique style. Severe and somber, its barrel vaulted naves with half barrel vaults over the aisles resulted in the dark interior of Notre Dame du Port, Clermont Ferrand (llth century). Four radiating chapels projected 'from the ambulatory, but the most peculiar feature was the raised central part of the transept, with a two-storied octagonal lantern above the crossing. The Church of St. Paul, Issoire, was almost a duplicate of Notre Dame du Port. |
