Oxidizing Materials Such:

Oxidizing Materials Such The NASA chemists also produced sugars by heating a dilute water solution of formaldehyde with alumina or either of two naturally occurring clay materials. They speculated that similar heating may have taken place on primitive earth in hot springs. Patents were granted for strong plastic materials that were expected to compete with metals for certain purposes. The materials were devel oped by oxidizing phenols, substances derived from petroleum. Two tough plastic resins, PRO and Noryl, both polyphenylene oxides, were produced by this method.

Gold is the noblest (most inert) of the metallic elements and exhibits great stability and resistance to corrosion. In addition it is the most ductile and malleable of the metals. It is also a good conductor of both heat and electricity. Gold is generally resistant to attack by the simple mineral acids, except for selenic acid. But it may be dissolved in hydrochloric acid in the presence of oxidizing materials such as oxygen, cupric or ferric ions, or manganese dioxide.

a General All materials subject to test and inspection, intended for use in boilers and machinery of vessels classed or proposed for classification, are to be tested and inspected by the Surveyor in accordance with the following requirements or their equivalent. Materials having characteristics differing from those prescribed herein require special approval for each application of such materials and the physical tests may be modified to suit conditions as approved in connection with the design.
