Outdoor Theatre: MR THEATRE, a New York organization that xluced plays from 1929 to 1941, attempting Ming new life and significance to what it con-a stagnant theater. It was founded by restigious Theatre Guild as the Theatre Studio and produced a number of experi-plays. Cheryl Crawford, Lee Strasberg, Ťa Harold Clurman were in control when it Paul Green's The House of Connelly 1), after which it became independent as Group Theatre.
The Group Theatre produced 26 more plays it was disbanded in 1941 because of finan-ti problems. Clifford Odets, originally an ac-with the Group Theatre, became its star .wright. Others included Maxwell Anderson, jiam Saroyan, Sidney Kingsley, and Irwin A. The Stanislavsky method of acting, used by the Group Theatre, became one of :hief acting styles in the American theater.
During the summer months, concerts given at Ravinia Park in Highland Park, a s urb of Chicago. Ravinia is an outdoor theatre pavi used for productions of various kinds. Tl are a number of theaters that present the j ductions of traveling companies. Also, the Go man Memorial Theatre of the Art Institute gi several fine productions each year. |
