Outdoor Estufa: At the far northwestern end of the avenida is King Edward VII Park, with an outdoor Estufa Fria, or "Cool Hothouse," so landscaped and latticed that Portugal's warm sun seeps through the leafy Roof to provide just that degree of cool warmth necessary for certain shrubs and plants. People like it quite as much as the plants do and to give it a special character worthy of so special a place, "pop concerts" by the Lisbon Symphony Orchestra are offered here from time to time (for an admission charge of about 4 cents!). You sit where you like, or merely wander about, if all the seats are taken.
GOING GREEN: Eco-friendly style is gaining in popularity, but it's not always easy to find. Here in the Valley it can be had at Modern Outdoor, based in Van Nuys. Their furniture has a sleek aesthetic with clean, simple lines. And one key material they use is Ipe, a sustainably harvested wood that's three times as dense as teak. "It's one of the best woods you can use to make outdoor furniture," says company vice president Brett Himmel. "Our furniture is designed for heavy commercial use. A 20-mile-per-hour gust of wind won't blow your chair into the neighbor's yard."
