Large Outdoor Play:

Large Outdoor Play Recreation.—The public park system embraces 735 acres. There are 10 large parks and 19 small ones, four community houses with playgrounds, a large outdoor swimming pool, and a zoo. The park system maintains three golf courses, 15 playgrounds, the majority of them lighted for night baseball. Fishing- and sailing are popular.

At the back of the house is usually where the private garden, the terrace, outdoor living room, play area and so on are located. Livability and usefulness should be stressed here. This part reflects you and your family and their way of life as surely as does the interior of your home. If there are children, play space for them may be included. The private area should be screened discreetly to provide reasonable privacy and block undesirable views.

Schools and Recreation.—The character of schools is changing rapidly. The one-story school properly oriented for sun, related to the scale of the child, and with large outdoor play areas is supplanting the three-story "monument" with an asphalt yard. There is a growing use of the school for adult education and for community use. Planners and educators are realizing the importance of acquiring large sites well in advance of population growth, and in this the planner can advise the school board of trends and of plans for such population generators as new highways or industrial locations.
