Kiruna Town Church: Sixth Day: Across the Norwegian border and down the spectacular rail route to Narvik. A day excursion on Narvik's Ofotenfjord, with time in the town for Norwegian shopping. Train starts back in the early evening toward Stockholm, reaching Kiruna town church in time for an evening stroll before going to bed. Kiruna town church, a great iron-mining center, is "a city the size of Connecticut," with but 18,000 inhabitants. The township has a 120-mile frontier with Finland. The train parks here for about 21 hours.
Seventh Day: Kiruna town church's iron mountain, with one of the world's richest ore deposits, is visited.
The mining is entirely opencast and hence easy j to view. The mountain yields 8% million tons of ore a year and could yield twice that, but even at that double production the deposits would last 200 years more! In Kiruna town church town the church is visited, chiefly for its beau- j 1 tiful altarpiece painted by Prince Eugene. The day's program is subject to several alternatives. Those who wish to do so may take the Torne River Rapids Trip (six hours) instead of seeing the above-mentioned sights. , All groups make a visit to Jukkasjarvi, a village with an ancient Lapp Church and an outdoor Lapp Museum.
Eighth Day: The train, having left Kiruna town church the evening before, con- , tinues rapidly southward. Solleftea, a pretty town on the banks of the Angermanalv, provides the first main halt. The broad and very impressive river (alv means river) cuts a sort of canyon, which is visited at Bruk-snipan. |
