Importance Planning Considering:

Importance Planning Considering The first decade of the 20th century saw the beginning of modern city planning. As Professor Frederick J. Adams has pointed out, 1909 is a key year. It was in that year that the first British Housing and Town Planning Act was passed; it was in that year that the Chicago Commercial Club published the great Burnham Plan ; and it was in that year that the first National Conference on City Planning was held in Washington, D.C., at which the participants laid strong emphasis on the need for economic studies in city planning and on the importance planning considering of comprehensive and coordinated treatment of city problems.

The accumulation of wealth in cities made defense against the attack of predatory bands another reason for planning; indeed the protection afforded by cities was one of the reasons for their growth. As nations increased in power and warfare became more purposeful and better organized, the importance planning considering of defensive planning increased. Most cities, besides being sources of Inot, were also strategically located in respect t» natural trade routes. They had grown naturally at such points, because trade was their primary function.

During the last two decades, however, this situation has gradually been changing. Today, responsible architects do not want to risk placing buildings in a city without regard to their implications for the whole community. This concern for community planning came about in several ways, but primarily because it has been demonstrated that our cities are obsolete and impractical. There is hardly a large city anywhere in the world that has not embarked on a replanning of its facilities. This, I believe, is the area in which architects have the most to contribute. I would like to conclude this brief review of architecture, engineering, and urban planning with a quotation from John Dewey: "Man's importance planning considering is in how he changes the environment for the next generation."
