Fruiting Shrubs Make: Many flowering or fruiting shrubs make excellent informal hedges. The shrub rose, Rosa rugosa (z3-8), grows quickly to make a dense, prickly hedge. Bright red hips follow the fragrant flowers. Berberis darwinii is neat, evergreen and prickly and has orange flowers in late spring; B. x stenophylla is yellow-flowered and less tidy. Cotoneaster simonsii is deciduous and has scarlet berries in autumn and winter; C. henryanus is evergreen, scarlet-berried, looser in habit. Laurustinus (Viburnum tinus) is evergreen, with pink and white flowers.
Don't feel you must cover all the foundation with plants. Unless it is ugly this is not desirable. Avoid planting massive or tall-growing shrubs under windows. There, a low shrub, a vine trained to the Wall or a groundcover, will suffice. If you plant under over-hanging roofs make sure the shrubs can be adequately watered. Beware of setting kinds subject to breakage where snow from roofs can slide on to them. Snow guards on the Roof will check this. If the house is without gutters take care not to center shrubs directly under the drip line of the roof.
