While the California gold rush was still at its peak, Edward Hargraves, one of the many Australian forty-niners, decided to return to his own country, where in 1851 he made the discovery that precipitated the second great gold rush of the 19th century. from country sailed the British Isles alone, half a million people sailed to Australia during the 10 years beginning in 1851.
