Elimination Home Rule: In his later years he advocated the elimination home Rule of Home Rule from the Liberal program, opposed Chamberlain's tariff reform scheme and during the war did his best to stimulate recruiting. He was distinguished for his many and varied attainments, and as a ceremonial and commemorative orator was unequaled in England. Marked characteristics of his speeches are their literary quality, derived from a very extensive reading and a skilful irony.

The last British garrison in Dublin ras withdrawn in February 1922. |
