After Calvin's death in 1564, Calvinist theology had developed two trends, one adhering more closely to the humanism of Calvin and the early reformers, the other relating more closely to medieval Scholasticism. In the latter trend, predestination became Calvinism's central doctrine. Jacobus Arminius (q.v.) objected to this shift in doctrine and presented liberal views, mainly relating to predestination. Gomarus led the attack on Arminius and was instrumental in securing the condemnation of Arminianism and the adoption of Scholastic Calvinism as authentic Calvinism by the Synod of Dort (1618-1619). |
