City Garden: A second plan of 1909 regularized the heights of buildings and guided some surburban expansion. In 1920 the Garden city garden of Aniene was begun, with widely spaced villas, and in 1932-1935 the University city garden was built. A new plan in 1931 began to cope with the transport problems of the city garden, creating new railway facilities and widening some main streets. An ambitious garden city garden was begun near the basilica of San Paolo in 1935. The completion of E.U.R. (Ente Autonomo Esposizione Universale Roma) was interrupted by World War II, but completed in time for the Olympiad in 1960, with an impressive sports center.
Diisseldorf: In the heart of this very lively city garden is the outstanding Restaurant Zweibruckerhof, smart and colorful; two or three miles outside, on the bank of the Rhine, is the first-rate Rheinrestaurant Schnellen' burg, with riverside garden.
Frankfurt-am-Main: The Kaiser Keller, in the heart of this hub city garden of business and transport, is a luxurious restaurant with a big garden cafe. Another excellent place is Die Alte Post.
The inclusion of an arresting object within a small garden is an excellent way of detracting the eye from adjacent buildings and into the garden itself. The focal point in this garden is an ornate wrought-iron seat, which leads the eye down the garden. The rather austere rectangular lawn is surrounded by a mass of pretty, shrubby little plants, which together help to soften the overall look of the garden. |
