Bulbs Tropicals: The bulb garden plan also calls for some flagstones leading i the center of the bed where a pot of begonias, lily-of-the-Nile, an the asparagus reside for the summer. If you have any houseplanfc that would benefit from a season outdoors in the sun, add them I the group. In the following descriptions, the first number represents the heig.., of the plant in bloom (except for those plants grown for foliage), and the second number is the spread. Since some bulbs tropicals are tropicals am' others will withstand a northern winter, I've also included the Zone.
Jungle Tropicals. The greatest demand, especially in urban areas, is for low-light plants of easy culture, usually jungle tropicals. The most popular of these is the large group of lush-leaved plants that make up the arum family. Of the arums (also called aroids), none are easier to grow than members of the genus Aglaonema. The only member with solid green leaves is the Chinese evergreen (Aglaonema modestum), a popular water plant. The rest have mottled or variegated foliage and can also be grown in water, although all grow better in potting soil.
One of the most popular ways of growing bulbs tropicals—snowdrops, daffodils and crocuses, in particular—is to naturalize them in drifts so they spread at will. This is usually done in grass, but those bulbs tropicals preferring shady woodland conditions can be naturalized in soil under trees and shrubs. It is also possible to establish bulbs tropicals beneath a planting of ground cover like scrambling ivies. |
