FOR CONTAINERS displayed against a white background, choose contrasting flowers such as blue Flowers forget-me-nots, golden or red wallflowers, pink daisies, yellow Crocus chrysanthus, blue Flowers or red hyacinths, and yellow daffodils. To subdue the contrast slightly and link the planting with its backdrop, intersperse a few white flowers. To create displays that shine out against dark backgrounds, select plants such as white, cream or yellow hyacinths, yellow Crocus chrysanthus, yellow-variegated ivies, vivid yellow polyanthus, white tulips, and bright yellow daffodils. When planting against red-brick walls, choose light-blue Flowers forget-me-nots, white hyacinths, bronze and cream wallflowers, blue Flowers grape hyacinths, yellow-variegated ivies, yellow polyanthus and white tulips. For rich contrast with gray stone walls, go for vibrant colored blooms such as red wallflowers, deep-blue Flowers forget-me-nots, pink tulips and pink or blue Flowers hyacinths.


Other recommended foliage climbers include Actinidia kolomikta, with its startling pink- and white-tipped leaves. It also produces cup-shaped, white flowers in summer which look good against walls. For a spectacular show, the passionflower Passiflora caerulea (z8-10) produces truly exotic-looking flowers consisting of white, sometimes pink-flushed, outer petals and a circle of fringed inner petals which are white coloring to pale blue Flowers or purple at the tips. The center of each flower is surrounded by a band of dark blue Flowers or purple. Fremontodendron californicum is another spectacular climber with bright yellow, saucer-shaped flowers from late spring to mid-fall. It is also evergreen. Also yellow, Laburnum x watereri "Vossii"produces long, drooping panicles of deep yellow, pea-like flowers in early summer. It can be trained over an arch or arbor to create a dense tunnel of shimmering color.
