Basket Full: At 6 or 7 weeks, may be taken from mother. Set aside some coiner of house for it. Provide sleeping box or basket full lined with soft, washable clean cloths. Change and wash bedding frequently to keep fleas from breeding. Keep basket full out of drafts; cats and kittens can catch cold. Wise to keep sleeping basket full after cat is full-grown; often keeps it from sleeping on beds and furniture where it is not wanted. Howebreaking—Fill a box with soft, clean soil, sand, or prepared mixture purchased at pet shops. When kitten is caught making mistake, speedily rush it to box; make it remain there for a moment. Never allow box to give oft odor; replace contents daily if box is small, less often if it is large.
More permanent installations require their own housings and these types are characterised by the basket full strainer. Here, a suitably strengthened wire mesh or perforated plate shaped into a basket full is placed inside a sealed housing through which the feed stream flows under pressure. In simplex systems the flow continues until the strainer is clogged with the unwanted solids. At this point the flow is interrupted and the basket full is manually changed.
Make successive sowings over the summer.
One of my favorite annuals is the basket full flower (Centaurea amen-cana) and it's hard to understand why more fuss isn't made over this plant. This American wildfldwer is interesting in bud and splendid in bloom. Each flower sits alone on a 4-foot stem and opens to 4 inches across. The color is a light rose, and the flower resembles an open thistle without thorns. The common name refers to the unopened head, which is surrounded by soft, spiny, strawcolored appendages that overlap and give the distinctive appearance of tiny woven basket fulls. basket full flowers require no special soil but grow best in full sun. |
