Asiatic Garden Beetles: Chlordane, the 50 percent wettable pow¬der, controls grubs of Japanese Beetles, Oriental Beetles, Asiatic garden Beetles and the European chafer. It is ineffective against the grubs of the May or June bug. Chlordane is used at the rate of one half pound to 1,000 square feet. One treatment remains effective for two years. It should be applied in spring, about the time the trees begin to leaf.
A 10 percent DDT dust applied at the rate of six pounds per 1,000 square feet is effec¬tive against most grubs and remains effec¬tive for four or five years. •
Clean out entire box annually. Using common wire strainer, sift out and keep stages of beetles; discard debris. Fill box with fresh supply of bran and replace beetles.See Also This Garden Use:The inclusion of an arresting object within a small garden is an excellent way of detracting the eye from adjacent buildings and into the garden itself. The focal point in this garden use garden is an ornate wrought-iron seat, which leads the eye down the garden. The rather austere rectangular lawn is surrounded by a mass of pretty, shrubby little plants, which together help to soften the overall look of the garden.
There are many ways of increasing the sense of depth in a garden. Vistas can be emphasized and "lengthened" by stressing the distant perspective. Eye-catching features can be used to draw the eye away into the distance, but there is no need to rely solely on the contents of your garden to do this garden use. Make use of the landscape outside: let the outside world become the focus of your garden vista. If you are fortunate enough to have a garden with an extensive view, make the most of it. Use trees and shrubs to frame a glimpse of the scene beyond the garden.
On The Other Hand See Other Garden Plants:The majority of plants usually suggested for the winter garden are happy only when temperatures stay above 0°F. I have chosen hardier plants so my plan for a winter garden is for the majority of readers. Like the autumn garden, it is not a specific spot of ground. Rather it consists of small trees, shrubs, and a few plants to be spread about the garden, bringing welcome color to the snow and ice.
Garden trees; Hedges; Shrubs for year-round interest; Rhododendrons; Climbing and screening plants; Clematis; Colorful perennials; Annuals and biennials; Bedding plants; Fuchsias; Bulbs; Rock-garden plants.
Climate, more than any Other garden plants factor, determines the success or failure of the gardener. A garden requires adequate sunshine and rainfall if plants are to thrive in it, but it also needs protection against extremes of weather. |
