TREES, trez, those woody, perennial, and seed-bearing plants, the thousands of diverse species of which grow almost everywhere on the earth's land surface except in very cold or very dry areas trees. Though varying greatly in size and longevity, trees all have certain basic characteristics in common and the organs and tissues composing them have similar functions, though there are distinct features by which their species can be identified. These are discussed under the following headings, as well as the global distribution of trees in typical forest regions and types, and the great economic values they offer mankind.
In a rustic garden the trees should be fruit trees wherever possible, or at least blossom trees of some kind. Apples, pears, plums, and cherries will all help to create the right atmosphere, as will nut trees such as hazel or almond. If there is space for a large tree, a Walnut might do. |
