GROS, gro, Antoine Jean (1771-1835), French painter, famous for his battlefield portraits of Napoleon and scenes from his campaigns. Born in Paris on March 16, 1771, Gros studied under the neoclassieist Jacques Louis David and in 1794 went to Italy to paint Napoleon. He was attached to Napoleon's staff as a commissioner of art, with the duties of selecting art objects from Italian collections to be installed in the newly created Musee du Louvre. As staff artist during later campaigns, Gros painted flattering portraits of Napoleon commanding in the field.


Gourgaud's writings include Napoleon et la Grande Armee en Russie (1824). He was also coauthor of Memoires pour servir a I'histoire de France sous Napoleon (1822-1823), an 8-volume history written partly under Napoleon's direction. Gourgaud's most important work was a 2-volume diary, Sainte-Helene; journal inedit de 1815 a 1818, which was published posthumously.
