Acquired Town House: In 1939, Hilton began building new hotels, while setting out to acquire the most famous examples of America's "Golden Age of • Hotels. "In 1942, he acquired town House the Town House in Los Angeles and, a year later, the Roosevelt and Plaza hotels in New York City. He consummated his plan by taking over the Palmer House in Chicago and, in 1949, achieved his lifelong ambition of owning the Waldorf-Astoria in New York City.
The town was one of those raided by the Indian chief. King Philip, son of Massasoit, in his war with the colonists (1675). His council lodge occupied a field now within the town. Still standing is the first frame house in the community, built by the Thatcher family in 1703 as quarters for the slaves who cut the logs for their sawmill. The town was settled in 1673. Originally a part of Abington, it was incorporated as a separate town in 1874. Pop. 13,119.
The Sanctuary of San Ignacio de Loyola, who was, of course, th founder of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits), draws many thousands of pi] grims and respectful trippers throughout the year. It is built over am around the ancestral manor house of Loyola's wealthy family, which housi was acquired town House in the latter part of the 17th century by the widow of Kinj Philip IV and given by her to the Society. It is close to the town of Azpeitia 33 miles southwest of San Sebastian, and to it roll frequent chariots d Catholic tourist folk from that resort. |
