A Large Proportion: The recreation space and equipment, more amply provided than during World War I, permitted participation by a large proportion of the workers. The planning for recreation by cities, counties and states was greatly increased during the war. as was the number of facilities and recreation leaders. But in 1951 in many crowded urban areas, where delinquency and other social problems were acute, recreation centers had not been developed in proportion to the need for them.
It also seemed likely that the DNA of the chloroplast contains large regions in which the genetic "message" is identical to that of part of the nuclear DNA. The current view was that two types of DNA will bind only if there are large regions in which the sequence of nucleo-tide bases are complementary to each other. Hybridization experiments in which chloroplast DNA from the alga Euglena gracilis was incubated with nuclear DNA of the same species showed that a large proportion of the plastid DNA became bound to nuclear DNA.
GOLDEN SECTION, a geometric proportion of ancient origin. When a line AB is divided at a point C such that AC-.AB = CB-.AC, we say that the line is divided in extreme and mean ratio. Such a division is also called the "golden section" or "divine proportion." When AC = r, AB = 1, then r-.l = (1 - r):r, or r + r - 1= 0, r = V2 VT- ¥2 = 0.618 .... Euclid, who in his Elements showed how to construct the golden section by means of compass and straightedge, used this proportion for the construction of the side of the regular polygon of 10 sides, which is ar when the radius of the circumscribed circle is a. |
